The first part of the Pushpa franchise ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ hit the theaters on December 17, 2021, right after the Covid lockdowns and went on to become a huge blockbuster not only in Telugu but also in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. The character ‘Pushparaj’ has become a household name across the country and Allu Arjun even won a National Award from the Government of India for his outstanding performance in the film. And now, in December 2024, Allu Arjun and director Sukumar are back with the second part of the Pushpa series, Pushpa: The Rule. The expectations and risks are many this time and Pushpa: The Rule is undoubtedly the most awaited and awaited film in India. Amid huge expectations, the film was released today. Have Allu Arjun & Sukumar delivered again? Has Allu Arjun delivered another national award-winning performance? What challenges did “Pushparaj” face after rising from a nobody to the biggest brand in the red sandal smuggling business? Could Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat finally take revenge on Pushpa? Has Devi Sri Prasad delivered another chartbuster album? Let’s find out with a detailed analysis.

What is it about?

Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna) asks her husband Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun) to take a photo with the state’s chief minister, but the chief minister denies taking a photo with Pushpa as he is a smuggler. How did Pushpa react to the Prime Minister’s denial? What challenges did he face as head of the Red Sandal smuggling syndicate? Did Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil) take revenge on Pushpa for the question he faced in Pushpas? Hands in the first part?, forms the rest of the story.

Appearances:

Allu Arjun did an excellent job as Pushpa in the first part of the franchise and even won a national award for his performance in the film. It is no exaggeration to say that he has outdone himself with his performance in Pushpa2: The Rule. The way he showcased every part of his face in the Jathara episode is outstanding. At least he delivered the best performance in seven to eight sequences of the film, including the breakdown sequence during the climax. This is the best performance of his career so far and he has a good chance of winning a national award again.

Fahadh Faasil as Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat is very entertaining. He lit up the screens with his timing and made the audience laugh several times. His character’s writing style had some flaws, but he made up for them with his effortless performance. Rashmika Manadanna as Sri Valli is first class. Be it romantic or emotional sequences or dancing in the Pellings song, she simply lived in the role of Srivalli.

Sreeleela in the song ‘Kissik’ danced well and gave tough competition to Allu Arjun in the dance department but she certainly doesn’t have the oomph factor of Samantha who lit up the screens with her screen presence in the song ‘Oo Antava Oo Oo Antava’ in the first part . Rao Ramesh as Siddapoa delivered a first class performance. Ajay pulled off a great scene during the climax and he made it count. Jagadeesh as Keshava did well but his character has neither depth nor the surprise factor. Jagapathi Babu, Sunil and Anasuya have done well but again their screen space is very limited.

Technical details:

Four songs of Devi Sri Prasad are good on screen. “Sooseki” is the best of all the songs and has a very good chance of dominating people’s playlists across the country for a long time. Both Devi Sri Prasad and Sam CS composed the background music for the film. Your work is mixed bad. The background music is very good in some sequences and in some sequences it could have been better. There were also problems with the synchronous sound in some sequences.

The cinematography by Mirosław Kuba Brożek is commendable. His work in the Jathara episode, the random sequence and the way he captured the lush green forests are worth mentioning. Naveen Nooli’s editing would have been better, especially in the second half. The production values of Mythri Movie Makers are top notch. They have put a lot of money into the film and it can be seen on the screen. VFX is decent. It’s neither great nor bad.

Positive:

  1. Allu Arjun’s unique performance
  2. 20 minute Jathara episode
  3. Interval sequence
  4. Four very good songs
  5. Sukumar’s writing and direction
  6. Fahadh Faasil’s entertaining performance
  7. Rashmika’s outburst sequence at the end of the Jathara episode

Negative:

  1. No strong antagonist characters
  2. Editing in places in the second half
  3. Sound synchronization issues in some sequences

Analysis:

“I have no chance if Sukumar stops making intelligent, mind-bending films and instead produces mass commercial masala films,” SS Rajamouli said a few years ago. And he was absolutely spot on. Sukumar stepped out of his comfort zone and first made Rangasthlam, a cult classic commercial film. And then came the Pushpa franchise. In Pushpa: The Rise we got a glimpse of the mass commercial director in him and in Pushpa2: The Rule we see the best version of the mass commercial director in Sukumar. He managed to perfectly combine the usual sensibility of “Sukumar Writings” with goosebump-inducing commercial elements.

He was spot on in the introductory sequence. The first half of the film is neatly packaged in the usual Sukumar mold with subtle references to the main character Pushpa Raj and ends with an excellent interval sequence. There was a slight drop in pace for a few minutes in the first half, but he finished the first half brilliantly with a very good sequence before the break.

In the second half, we see a completely different Sukumar. The way the entire Jathara episode was written, directed and choreographed and the way Allu Arjun performed in this entire episode is mind-blowing. It’s no exaggeration to say that the film is worth checking out in theaters for this one 20-minute episode alone. The way he incorporated the “Peelings” and “Kissik” songs into the narrative of the story shows us what a genius he is when it comes to writing the script. Also, redesigning the ‘Jathara’ episode during the climax episode with the same getup of the hero’s character is another masterstroke from the idiosyncratic director.

Some may complain about a few scenes between husband (Pushpa) and wife (Srivalli), but even in these sequences, the director never overacted in Sukumar. His writing and meaningful dialogues about Pushpa and Srivalli, how they both love each other and how they go out of their way to support the other person are great. Ajay’s emotional breakdown sequence during the climax is another brilliantly written and executed sequence. His writing and powerful and thought-provoking dialogues about the importance of women in a man’s life and respect for women are top notch. He is sure to receive applause from the women.

On the other hand, there is no strong antagonist in the film. Although there are several antagonist characters, Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, Prathap Reddy, Bugga Reddy, Siddappa, Mangalam Srinu and Dakshayani, none of the characters and their antagonists really challenge Pushparaj. He comes out on top every time. Sukumar and the writing team would have focused a little more on giving the main character difficult challenges. The editing should have been a little tighter in the second half.

Overall, Pushpa2: The Rule has a few flaws, but the positives outweigh those flaws. Allu Arjun’s career-best performance coupled with Sukumar’s script and direction for the ‘mass commercial’ make the film highly entertaining and definitely worth watching in crowded theaters.

Conclusion: Pushpa Gadi Thandavam

Rating – 3.25/5
