Rafael Stone: Don’t expect any changes during the season

In recent days, the Rockets have been linked to Heat forward Jimmy Butler. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Heat are open to offers for the former All-Star. In addition to the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks, the Rockets are considered strong possible suitors.

That’s not surprising given Houston’s success so far this season (currently second in the Western Conference, at 17-8) and the massive trade reserves the team’s front office has accumulated. It’s only reasonable to conclude that the Rockets would be available to upgrade before this year’s trade deadline.

But in a recent appearance on SiriusXM, Rockets general manager Rafael Stone disputed any notion that he is seeking a major shakeup of his roster this season. “We definitely have no intention of changing anything and I would be shocked if anything changed this season,” Stone said. Stone indicated that he would listen to any offers as part of the normal due diligence that comes with the nature of his role, but that he was not actively seeking possible moves.

The Rockets have financial flexibility when planning blockbuster transactions. The team is currently $10.5 million under the luxury tax line and $15.2 million under the first apron.

Aside from a plethora of young talent, the Rockets have tradeable salaries in the form of Steven Adams ($12.6 million), Jeff Green ($8 million), Jock Landale ($8 million) and Jae’Sean Tate ($7.6 million) for matching purposes when a potential trade partner seeks financial relief. They are also eligible for future draft picks from the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns.

Houston was one of the best defensive teams in the league all season long. It’s the offense that has stalled and is in the bottom third of the league. If Stone can add a perimeter scorer at the deadline without sacrificing any of his core, the Rockets could make a move.

Despite Stone’s rejection, Butler would fit well into head coach Ime Udoka’s defensive culture. The Tomball native is reportedly open to returning home. Stone may not have any intention of taking action, but it’s a story worth keeping an eye on.
