Raheem Morris of the Atlanta Falcons leaves the door open for Michael Penix to start against Giants

The Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback position is currently undetermined ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris was asked during his Zoom press conference Monday whether Kirk Cousins will remain his starter, and Morris declined to answer because of outside calls for rookie Michael Penix Jr., the team’s first-round draft pick , were made.

After the Falcons’ 15-9 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, their plane landed at 5:45 a.m. – 11 1/2 hours before Morris spoke to reporters.

Therefore, Atlanta still needs to make further evaluations.

“I think we have to go through the process,” Morris said. “I think you’re catching me at a different time than usual. We’ve had more time to organize, just in general.

Cousins has thrown an NFL-level 16 interceptions this season and has thrown at least one interception in each of his last five games. Against the Raiders, Cousins completed 11 of 17 passes for 112 yards, the fourth fewest in his career as a starter, along with a touchdown and an interception.

Morris noted that the 36-year-old cousin’s recent troubles have taken a toll on him.

“When you go through the phase we’re going through right now, you’re not going to have the same confidence and swagger that you had in the first two or three months of the season,” Morris said.

Penix has played in two games this season, passing for 38 yards on 3-for-5, as a replacement for Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million contract this spring.

Morris acknowledged Sunday after the game that the Falcons need better performance at the quarterback position — and ultimately, that’s all that matters to Morris.

“You have to do your best to win the next game,” Morris said.

The Falcons (7-7) host the Giants (2-12) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
