“Raiders’ Scott Turner is on the radar to become North Carolina’s OC”

“Raiders’ Scott Turner is on the radar to become North Carolina’s OC”

Serving as the Raiders’ interim offensive coordinator, Scott Turner they may have to find another gig in 2025. Since the Raiders are 2-11, they are not expected to be retained Antonio Pierce and its employees for the 2025 season.

Another opportunity may arise soon. The nowBill BelichickThe North Carolina-run program is believed to view Turner as a top OC candidate, notes NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. In contrast to Belichick, Turner completed previous coaching training at college. However, the second-generation NFL player spent the majority of his career in the pros.

Turner, 42, spent three seasons in Pittsburgh (2008-10) and later spent a year there Jim Harbaugh‘s Michigan Staff (2017). None of those stops included coordinator duties, but Turner has reached that level with multiple NFL franchises in recent years. Before he was subsequently promoted to his current position Luke GetsyAfter his discharge, Turner served as OC for the Panthers and Commanders.

It would be pretty interesting if Belichick went in that direction considering how close the six-time Super Bowl winning HC is Josh McDaniels. The latter served as OC of the Belichick Patriots for 13 seasons in two stints. McDaniels also regularly discussed career and college options with Belichick in recent months. While one report suggested that McDaniels and other former Belichick lieutenants were willing to follow the former New England czar wherever he went, it is unclear whether that included a college move. The fact that McDaniels hired Turner during his time as Raiders HC is interesting here as it creates a clear connection to Belichick, who has never worked with Turner before.

Before joining the Raiders as passing game coordinator in 2023, Turner served as quarterbacks coach at Carolina; this term ended with Ron Riverafires and presses a Norv Turner He leaves the OC chair to make way for his son. Scott then followed Rivera to Washington, where he was tasked with running offenses that had no good answers at quarterback. The Commanders fired Turner after three seasons in which his offense finished outside the top 20 in scoring. This Raiders stint has yet to produce a win; This also included coaching Turner Gardner Minshew, Aidan O’Connell And Desmond Ridder in a crime that lost Davante Adams about a trade early in the season.

In addition to the fact that Turner worked with McDaniels, there was some overlap with them Mick Lombardi with the Raiders in 2023. The latter is the son of the current UNC GM Michael Lombardy. Mick is currently stationed as the 49ers’ Senior Offensive Assistant. McDaniels hasn’t had any connection to an NFL job since being fired from the Raiders, so it would be a surprise if he wasn’t considered for the Tar Heels’ play-calling position. On the other hand, McDaniels has not broken through the college ranks since beginning his career as a graduate assistant at Michigan State University in 1999. The disappointing HC may be eyeing an early return to the NFL, but it’s not a given that he’ll follow his long-time boss again.
