As wet weather returns to Northern California after a string of dry days, commuters in the Valley can expect a wet morning, while travelers in the Sierra can expect traffic delays as snow falls. KCRA 3 is calling Thursday an Impact Day because of the significant rain and snow that can impact outdoor activities and travel. Track traffic conditions here. Sierra snow, Valley rain updates 12:45 p.m.: A jackknifed large truck caused road closures on westbound Interstate 80 west of Blue Canyon, the California Highway Patrol said. There is no estimated time for reopening. 12 p.m.: Meteorologist Eileen Javora provides the latest weather updates and precipitation totals. 9:14 a.m.: A large rig fell down an embankment in the Sierra, according to the California Highway Truckee Division. 8:09 a.m.: CHP Truckee says a pickup truck driver was lucky to escape with minor injuries after his vehicle lost control and overturned. 8:03 a.m.: We were able to see the major accident live. A tow truck is ready to pull it off along Interstate 80 at Rainbow Road. California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials, along with surrounding water agencies, became aware of the accident after approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel were consumed. 7:01 a.m.: These are the latest chain checks for Highway 50 and Interstate 80. Highway 50 requires chains for all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from 3 miles east of Kyburz to Meyers in El Dorado County. Interstate 80 eastbound: Chains are required for all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from Baxter in Placer County to Truckee in Nevada County. Westbound: Chains are required for all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from Truckee in Nevada County to Baxter in Placer County. 5:40 a.m.: Caltrans issues chain controls for portions of Interstate 80 at higher elevations. Drivers must have chains on their tires when traveling eastbound on I-80 from Kingvale to Baxter and westbound to Baxter from the Donner Lake Interchange, Caltrans said. Minimum restrictions apply to trucks. Four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires are exempt, Caltrans said. All westbound trucks must stop at the brake control area 0.5 miles west of Nyack in Placer County. This is intended to reduce the risk of brake fires. 4:53 a.m.: The California Highway Patrol says there is a broken down truck on Interstate 80 eastbound at Rainbow Road. The large rig is located on the median and does not block any lanes. Northern California Forecast. Meteorologist Dirk Verdoorn said it will rain until mid-morning and there will be showers that will last throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The largest accumulations are expected before sunrise, but Thursday will be a wet day with a few breaks in the morning and evening. Snow levels on Thursday will be between 4,000 feet and 5,000 feet. Rain showers will continue, but amounts will be lighter on Friday. Saturday will see a heavier shower with heavier rainfall and gusty winds. There will be a break in the rain on Sunday before further showers continue through Monday. Meteorologist Heather Waldman said 2 inches of rain could fall in the valley through Monday, while Tahoe ski resorts could see 2 to 3 feet of snow. Further information can be found here. Sierra snow and valley rain updates

12:45 p.m.:There were road closures on westbound Interstate 80 west of Blue Canyon, according to the California Highway Patrol. There is no expected reopening date.

9:14 a.m.: According to the California Highway Truckee Department, a large truck crashed down an embankment in the Sierra.

7:01 a.m.: These are the newest chain controls for Highway 50 and Interstate 80.

Highway 50

From 3 miles east of Kyburz to Meyers in El Dorado County, chains are required for all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires.

Interstate 80

Eastbound: Chains are required for all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from Baxter in Placer County to Truckee in Nevada County.

Westbound: Chains are required for all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires from Truckee in Nevada County to Baxter in Placer County.

Northern California Forecast

Meteorologist Dirk Verdoorn said it would rain during the morning and showers would continue throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The largest accumulations are expected before sunrise, but Thursday will be a wet day with some breaks in the morning and evening.

Snow levels on Thursday will range from 4,000 feet to 5,000 feet. Rain will continue, but amounts will be lighter on Friday.

A stronger system will develop Saturday with heavier rainfall and gusty winds.

There will be a break in the rain on Sunday before further showers continue through Monday.
