Rams vs 49ers live game thread

SAN FRANCISCO – The Los Angeles Rams (7-6) look to stay atop the NFC West with another crucial win this Thursday night as they travel north to take on their bitter rival San Francisco 49ers (6-7). The Rams are looking to make it three wins in a row and three wins in a row in the division.

Remember the rule of five. The game is over if the Los Angeles Rams win this important statistical battle. For those who don’t remember, it has to do with sacks and envelopes. If the Rams have three sacks and give up two, they are plus-one. They have a plus-three if they commit four turnovers and give up just one. That would give them a plus four for the day. They want to achieve a plus-five ratio in every game. On average, teams that achieve the Rule of Five Scenarios win 91 percent of their NFL games.

The Rams are coming off their surprising home win over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, scoring 44 points, a season high. They converted 5-6 times in the red zone and scored points on six of their nine full drives. They’ll look to keep the good times going against the troublesome 49ers this week.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford just threw a season-high 320 yards with two touchdown passes against the Bills. Star sophomore wide receiver Puka Nacua also posted a season-high 162 receiving yards on 12 catches and a receiving-and-rushing touchdown.

The Rams scored 44 points against a Bills defense that allowed an average of just over 18 points per game. This week they face a 49ers defense that ranks third overall, giving up just 298.5 total yards per game and recording the 10th-most sacks this season (35).

The 49ers just ended their three-game losing streak with a commanding 25-point win over the struggling Chicago Bears last week. The injury-riddled 49ers have struggled to stay afloat this season, with a series of mistakes among starting backups.

The running game will be the weakest part of the 49ers team, with their top two running backs likely out for the remainder of the regular season. All-Pro Christian McCaffrey was sidelined for the remainder of the year after Week 13, and sophomore defensive back Jordan Mason was sidelined with injury the same week.

To establish a viable rush attack, rookie back Isaac Guerendo stepped in for most of his career last week. He would also suffer an injury that currently lists him as questionable for Thursday’s game against the Rams. If Guerendo doesn’t play, the 49ers are in trouble.

The Rams currently have a 2-1 record in the division, while the 49ers are 1-3 against NFC West opponents. A win for the Rams would potentially see them tied for first place in the division unless they lose to the Seattle Seahawks (8-5) against the Green Bay Packers (9-4) on Sunday afternoon.
