Record-breaking trip for the two-week holiday

CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain in the passport) >> According to Gianella Ghiglino of AAA of Southern California, 9.9 million people in Southern California will travel during the holiday season and 8.7 million of those travelers will travel over the two weeks. They also said that about 90% of leisure travelers would drive to their destinations. Before you head out, check out the Pain In The Pass Facebook group for current traffic conditions.

NO ROADWORK Friday morning, December 20th – Thursday morning, January 2nd from the 10 Freeway to Stateline on Interstate 15 this Christmas/New Year week. Road construction work with lane closures will begin on Thursday evening, January 2nd.

Traffic tips:

Expect delays for northbound traffic on I-15 Thursday and Friday afternoon/evening. Friday will be the hardest day as it is the last day of school. It will be very busy on Monday and Tuesday afternoon/evening. There may be traffic jams at night on Wednesday, Christmas Day.

Delays are expected on I-15 northbound and southbound on Friday, December 27, heading into the new year.

Expect delays on Wednesday, January 1st and Thursday, January 2nd. Saturday and Sunday, January 4th and 5th, everyone will come home.

Traffic focal points will be Cajon Pass, Devore, Hesperia, Victorville, Barstow, Baker and Stateline. Try to travel during off-peak hours (early morning or late at night). The worst time to travel is between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Fridays every week.

If you’re planning on traveling this Christmas/New Year weekend, here are some helpful tips:

• Travel early in the morning if possible – try to leave before midday each day.

• BRING WATER! Also bring snacks and necessary medications.

• Before you set off, have a full tank of fuel.

• Make sure your car is in good running condition. Check all fluids, tires and tire pressure.

• Bring a charged cell phone (with car charger).

• Go to the bathroom before you drive – you don’t know where you might be stopped for a long time.

• Please be patient. No need for road rage this holiday weekend.

• Do your research before you go and check out the Pain In The Pass Facebook group for current highway 15 traffic conditions. Plan ahead and allow extra time before your trip. Have a positive attitude – relax and enjoy the ride!
