RIP Rey Misterio Sr.: Lucha Libre royalty dies at 66

Accordingly AAA Lucha Libre, Rey Mystery Sr., an uncle of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio and a pioneer of the Lucha Libre community, has died. Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, better known as Misterio Sr., died on December 20, 2024 at the age of 66.

In 1976, Rey Mysterio Sr. began his remarkable wrestling career and rose to prominence in the industry. Although he officially retired in 2009, his love for the sport led him to put on his boots for the last time in 2023 when he defeated Hereje, Hijo de Pirata Morgan and Nightmare Azteca in a global Lucha Libre event with Aero Star Lord Iguana.
In honor of the famous luchador, AAA posted on social media:
“Lamentamos el reasonable fallecimiento de Miguel Ángel López Díasconocido como Rey Mysterio Sr. Enviamos our most sincere pésame to his Seres queridos y elevamos our oraciones al cielo por su eterno descanso.”
In other words: “We mourn the tragic death of Miguel Ángel López Días, also known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We pray for his eternal rest in heaven and extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.”

As a mentor and performer, Rey Mysterio Sr. had a significant impact on the professional wrestling industry. His legacy was carried on by his nephew, WWE’s Rey Mysterio, who began his career as Rey Mysterio Jr. before dropping the “Jr.” when he joined the organization in 2002. In 1995, the two won the WWA Tag Team Championship together, one of their many unforgettable moments in the ring. (via WrestleTalk)
Mysterio Sr. was also successful alongside other well-known personalities such as his son El Hijo del Rey Mysterio and the famous luchador El Dandy. He inspired generations of fans and shaped the careers of many wrestlers, leaving an incalculable impact on Lucha Libre and the wrestling community as a whole.
