River Hawks continue homestand against Stonehill

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men’s basketball team (8-4) continues its five-game home series against the Stonehill Skyhawks (6-6) on Wednesday, December 18th.

A WIN WOULD
A win would move the River Hawks to 9-4 on the season and extend the team’s winning streak to five games against Stonehill. It would also improve the team’s home record this year to 8-0.

LAST TIME
Fifth year Max Brooks scored a team-high 26 points to help the UMass Lowell men’s basketball team (8-4) earn a 92-83 win over Dartmouth (4-6) on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Athletic Center. The big man went a perfect 12-for-12 on field goals against Dartmouth, tying the NCAA record this season and marking the best performance by a player nationally since the 2021-22 season.

BLOCK PARTY
After a season-high eight blocks against LIU, Max Brooks He now holds the all-time program record with 249 career blocks, surpassing Leo Parent’s 246, which stood as the record for 35 years. He also ranks third among NCAA active career leaders in this category. This season, Brooks is averaging 2.58 blocks per game, more than half a block higher than his career average of 1.90. He currently ranks third in the country with 31 total blocks this year, and his eight blocks against LIU are the most in a single game ever in the country.

ROOKIE YEAR

Martin Somerville has already posted two 20-point games this season, with a season-high 22 points at Massachusetts, and leads all newcomers in the America East with 13.1 points per game (12th overall). His 45% shooting margin from distance puts him sixth in the conference in three points per game (2.2). He also won the league’s Rookie of the Week award in five of the first six weeks of the season.

The team plays well when it has the lead and has a 5-0 halftime lead so far this year.

The River Hawks have shown their composure and toughness this season, trailing or tied in the second half before claiming victory in four games so far this year, most recently against Dartmouth.

With an average of 84.6 points per game in 12 games, the River Hawks currently rank second in the America East and 31st nationally in offense. Last season, UMass Lowell ranked 36th nationally with an average of 80.0 points per game, the highest scoring average of any America East team since 2016-17, when UMBC averaged 81.1 ppg. The team set a new DI record and scored the most points in a single game since 1995 with 121 in the contest against Fisher.
