Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler brings his experience from three previous starts for the New Orleans Saints to Monday’s game against the Packers

Rattler completed 10 of 21 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown, was not sacked and showed a level of composure not present in his first stint behind center.

“I think, especially with a rookie, you have to overthink it, or with a player who hasn’t had a lot of starts,” Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi said. “Sometimes when you come off the bench you say, ‘Hey, you gotta go.’ You don’t get a chance to think through all the different things and scenarios and all that.

“When you’re the starter, sometimes you go into a game and all of a sudden you think about the first and second down plan, the third down plan, the two minute plan, the red zone plan.” Me I think it can be a bit too much for young, inexperienced quarterbacks.

“I think our coaching staff did a great job preparing this week. Hopefully that carries over to Monday night too.”

Rattler, who has been sacked 14 times in his last three starts, seems to believe so.

“You can’t think about it too much,” he said. “The bag is rarely super clean, so being able to throw from any base and any pocket is a plus in my opinion.”

“I think you see the great quarterbacks in this league make throws from all over the place – when they have a good base, when something goes off script, goes off schedule, you have to make that play and give your guy a chance.” .

“I think that’s one thing I did in this last game — I wanted to give my receivers, my tight ends more chances. When they’re one-on-one, I trust these guys to make the play. This can’t be too safe, let’s make some plays, have some explosives and that will give the offense momentum and momentum.”
