Ruben Amorim immediately breaks the 34-year-old unwanted Man United record against Man City

Ruben Amorim is aiming for the biggest win of his tenure at Manchester United as historic failures at the club leave him with unwanted records.

The Portuguese is battling it out with Pep Guardiola again in the first derby of the season, but his name has already etched itself into history.

After a brief stint as new manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, Amorim have since suffered two consecutive defeats in the Premier League.

After a 2-0 away defeat at Arsenal and a surprising 3-2 defeat against Nottingham Forest within a week, the club is in 13th place in the table.

This is the Red Devils’ lowest starting position in a Manchester Premier League derby since August 2007, when they were 16th.

On that occasion, Geovanni’s surprise first-half strike sealed a 1-0 win for City, continuing Sven-Göran Eriksson’s perfect start as manager.

However, this encounter came just three games into the season and Sir Alex Ferguson recovered again to win the title the following May.

Unfortunately for Amorim, their current 13th-place finish is their lowest since United started a top-flight Manchester derby since February 1990, playing at least 10 games in a season.

The 1-1 draw carried a lot more weight with it – it came just weeks after Ferguson found himself on the brink.

The legendary Scot was appointed manager at Old Trafford in 1986, but it took four years before he finally won the FA Cup.

Then-Man United chairman Martin Edwards has admitted he would have sacked Ferguson if they had lost in the third round in January.

Mark Robins famously saved Fergie’s job with the winning goal against Nottingham Forest, putting the Red Devils on course to win the competition.

A month later, United finished in 17th place in a thrilling local derby and managed to avoid a morale-sapping defeat with a 1-1 draw.

Ferguson finally reached 13th place in May, their lowest league finish since relegation from the First Division 15 years ago.

The FA Cup triumph helped ease the mounting pressure and ultimately paved the way for a period of Premier League dominance.

Ferguson never finished outside the top three after the top flight was renamed before his retirement in 2013.

His departure subsequently resulted in the club’s worst Premier League finish under his immediate successor David Moyes, placing the club in seventh place.

Ten Hag went one step further last season by finishing one place lower, and an FA Cup also bought him some more time.

Unlike Ferguson, the Dutchman was unable to use the Wembley success as a springboard to further fame and was sacked in October.

Amorim is the man tasked with taking on the task, but he has only managed to move up one position from 14th place, which Ten Hag left.

As a result, the record books have already changed since the first whistle against City, but three points are still up for grabs.

Amorim will also be buoyed by his impressive Champions League win against Guardiola’s City with his former club Sporting Lisbon last month.
