Rumor has it the Red Sox target is agreeing to a massive deal with the D-Backs

An NL West team reportedly won the Corbin Burnes sweepstakes early Saturday morning.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Burnes agreed to a six-year, $210 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The deal reportedly includes an opt-out after two years.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly been “in contact” with the four-time All-Star and some pundits and insiders believed they were open to potentially signing the right-hander. Instead, the team moved from Alex Cora to Garrett Crochet and reportedly agreed to a deal with Walker Buehler. The Sox have also reportedly been involved in other trade discussions.

Burnes reportedly wanted to stay in his West Coast home and lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. The D-Backs were the pick for the National League Cy Young winner. However, the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays were reportedly favorites for his services.

The Orioles and Blue Jays will likely leave the Burnes sweepstakes disappointed, as Baltimore lost its ace and Toronto missed out on another key free agent it had been heavily linked to. Arizona gets another pitcher to lead its impressive rotation to compete in the NL West.

Burnes’ reported mega-deal will likely galvanize the rest of the pitching market as teams look for backup plans.
