Ryan Poles has reportedly already made his decision regarding Matt Eberflus

Matt Eberflus can count himself lucky. He became head coach of the Chicago Bears, who have never fired anyone mid-season in their 100-year existence. He also has a GM at his helm who has always had his back through the organization’s many setbacks. In almost any other situation, he would have already been fired. It is inexcusable to squander a 4-2 start to go 4-7 and end all playoff hopes. Coaches were fired for significantly less money. Nevertheless, there are persistent rumors that the Poles could try to convince the team management to stay on track for another year.

At least that was the case a few weeks ago. It’s not that anymore. A source told SM that Eberflus’ fate has already been decided. It is expected that he will be fired and the Poles will remain GM and lead the search for a replacement. So what has changed? The breaking point is believed to have come when the Bears lost 19-3 at home to New England. It was a game they should have won. The fact that the team seemed so unprepared and half-interested finally convinced the Poles that a change was necessary.

Owners remain unenthusiastic about firing a coach midseason. However, there are two factors at play that could end this series for good. One of them is the possibility of being humiliated on national television against Detroit on Thanksgiving. It would be Eberflus’ sixth straight loss and his record against the NFC North would drop to 2-13. The other is the recent emergence of new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. There is more and more excitement around him in the locker room. His quick turnaround opposite Caleb Williams caught the attention of many in the building. Some are of the opinion that he definitely has the qualities of a head coach. If Eberflus were fired on Black Friday, he would have to audition for five games to win the job.
