Sachin Tendulkar on Ashwin’s retirement: “True greatness lies in never being afraid, experimenting and evolving” | Cricket News

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute to R Ashwin, who announced his international retirement after the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Brisbane, and traced the Tamil Nadu cricketer’s journey from a promising talent to India’s off-spin maestro.

Ashwin, who made his international debut in 2010 and played his first Test the following year, was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team alongside Tendulkar and became India’s leading match-winner with the ball in a brilliant 13-year red-ball career Home tests. Just months after becoming the oldest Indian to take five wickets, a record-breaking 37th, Ashwin bowed out of the international stage as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in all formats (765) and second-highest in Tests with 537 scalps in 106 appearances.

Tendulkar hailed Ashwin’s emergence as a ball master and took to social media to celebrate the career of the Tamil Nadu regular. “Ashwin, I have always admired the way you approached the game with perfect harmony of mind and heart. From perfecting the carrom ball to scoring crucial runs, you always found a way to win,” Tendulkar wrote on X.

“It was wonderful to see you grow from a promising talent to one of India’s best match-winners. Her journey shows that true greatness lies in not being afraid to experiment and evolve. Her legacy will inspire all. I wish you all the best for your second innings,” Tendulkar added.

Ashwin and Tendulkar appeared together in 29 matches for India in ODIs and Tests, including the master batter’s last international appearance in a Test match against West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in November 2013. Ashwin took seven wickets as India in the match won by an innings and 126 runs. Ashwin was also part of the Indian eleven in Tendulkar’s last ODI appearance against Pakistan in 2012.
