Saints coach Darren Rizzi unleashes his anger on the player after the game against the Giants

New Orleans Saints player Matthew Hayball faced the wrath of interim coach Darren Rizzi in Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Hayball hit a ball to returner Ihmir Smith-Marsette in the second quarter. Smith-Marsette made a play and took the punt all the way back for what the Giants thought was a touchdown, even nearly fumbling the ball on the way to the end zone.

As the Giants celebrated, the players realized that a flag had been thrown onto the field. New York had to hold and wipe Smith-Marsette’s punt return touchdown off the board.

Rizzi was seen running into Hayball on the sideline. Saints running back Alvin Kamara had to stand between his coach and his teammates. It was a 43-yard punt, but it appeared Rizzi was upset about how it was passed to Smith-Marsette.

The Saints’ special teams clearly hold a special place in Rizzi’s heart. He joined the Saints in 2019 as special teams coordinator after serving in the same role with the Miami Dolphins. In 2022, he was promoted to special teams coordinator and assistant head coach.

Rizzi took over as the team’s interim head coach midway through this season after New Orleans fired Dennis Allen.
