Saints sign former LSU star Clyde Edwards-Helaire | Saints

The New Orleans Saints are bringing in former LSU star running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to bolster their backfield.

Edwards-Helaire is a native of Baton Rouge and has spent his entire NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City waived him earlier this week after he totaled 2,610 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns in four seasons there.

New Orleans signed Edwards-Helaire to the practice squad. To make room for him on the roster, the Saints waived defensive tackle Kendal Vickers from the practice squad.

The Chiefs selected Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft after he ran for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns for LSU’s national championship team in 2019. He ran for 803 yards as a rookie, but his playing time has decreased since the last few seasons.

Saints starter Alvin Kamara is currently dealing with a groin injury that kept him out of action for much of the fourth quarter in last week’s loss to the Washington Commanders. Interim coach Darren Rizzi suggested Kamara’s injury was not serious.

Edwards-Helaire now joins a backfield that includes Kamara, Kendre Miller, Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims on the active roster. New Orleans also has running back Xazavian Holliday on its practice squad.

The Baton Rouge native attended Catholic high school before beginning his career at LSU.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Edwards-Helaire began to establish himself in his sophomore season at LSU before taking over as the starter in his junior season. In LSU’s national championship win over Clemson, he gained 164 yards from scrimmage on 21 touches.
