Sam Altman asked ChatGPT users what they would like to see in 2025 and gave some hints about what to expect

Since its launch in 2022, ChatGPT has been a leader when it comes to bringing AI into the mainstream. ChatGPT is to AI what Google is to search engines. Yes, there are others, but OpenAI’s chatbot seems to have captured the zeitgeist of the LLM field.

In the two years since its public launch, ChatGPT has not only built a sizable user base (reported to have over 200 million weekly active users as of August 2024, double the November 2023 figure), but also released several new models, including GPT- 4, 4o and o1 – bringing the OpenAI chatbot ever closer to the company’s long-standing goal of developing AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).

In addition, ChatGPT received several new features, including an expanded voice mode, custom instructions, custom GPTs accessible through the new GPT Store, expanded editing and writing tools through Canvas, mobile apps, and the ability to check for updates on the web. Current information on a specific topic, effectively eliminating the chatbot’s knowledge cutoff date.

The latter has since evolved into ChatGPT Search, a feature similar to Google’s AI Overview for Search, except that the OpenAI version so far doesn’t recommend users eat and stick rocks or chlorine gas in their washing machines to produce.

Taking all of this into account, along with the launch of the Sora text-to-video model and the new 1-800 ChatGPT phone number, it’s been a busy and feature-rich few years for the OpenAI team.

So what’s next? Well, while OpenAI still has plenty of irons in the fire with upcoming projects, most notably the impending release of GPT-o3, Sam Altman took to X on Christmas Eve to ask the internet at large: “What do you think OpenAI should build/ repair?” in 2025?”

Several suggestions caught the OpenAI CEO’s attention enough for him to respond. Some of these could tell us more about what we can expect from ChatGPT in the next year and beyond.

Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI, received several thousand replies to his post late on Christmas Eve, some of which were even answered in person. From these answers we can learn more about what to expect from OpenAI in the next 12 months.

In response to the post above, Altman replied: “Very good list! Hopefully next year you’ll be pretty happy with us overall.”

But what exactly can we expect from this list? Now, as far as a strong GPT-4o replacement goes, the latest reveal from OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” revealed that GPT-o3 and GPT-o3 Mini will be the next models we expect to see from the company will be published in January 2025.

Whether this model meets the commentator’s requirement for “long context” remains to be seen. However, in another answer, Altman suggests: “Increase rate limits, increase context and reduce costs!” GPT-o3 is said to be three times more accurate than the o1 model launched in September 2024.

As for AGI, we know that this is the ultimate goal of OpenAI. Still, achieving this in 2025 feels like wishful thinking.

Altman responded to this post only with the “eyes” emoji (👀), suggesting that there is something we should pay attention to here.

API talk aside, I’d say there’s a good chance Altman is hinting at a video input for ChatGPT, especially given GPT-4o’s multimodal capabilities.

We learned in November that OpenAI also plans to launch an AI agent tool to automate certain tasks for users, so we expect we’ll hear more about that in 2025 as well.

However, Altman may be nodding to talk of hardware. It’s something of an open secret that OpenAI is currently working with Apple hardware alum Jony Ive to develop a product that they hope could become the “iPhone of AI.” Will this product be introduced in 2025?

Given that Sora has only just launched publicly and is already facing stiff competition from Veo 2, Kling and Hailuo AI, it’s no wonder Altman is willing to confirm that the young text-to-video generator is simply making improvements is experienced answers “comes”.

While Altman falls a little short of providing an actual guarantee on this proposal, the OpenAI CEO’s “Hope to!” is a bit terse. The answers suggest that GPT-4o image generation is at least possible.

When it comes to family accounts for ChatGPT, Altman seems convinced. “That’s a good idea!” doesn’t exactly scream “We’re on the case,” but it would allow parents to introduce younger family members to OpenAI’s chatbot in a safe and controlled environment.

As for the chatbot gaining insights about your children, I personally find it a bit intrusive to trust OpenAI, but the general idea is solid.

What’s next?

While Altman wasn’t particularly candid with his answers, his X thread certainly had plenty of suggestions for how OpenAI can further refine the ChatGPT experience.

There seems to be a lot of interest in integrating Sora’s capabilities into ChatGPT’s main model, similar to what was the case with text-to-image generator Dall.E.

When it comes to more powerful models, we will launch GPT-o3 in January next year, and 2025 should also see the launch of the highly anticipated GPT-5.
