San Francisco was hit by a tornado warning for the first time after a devastating storm ripped through Northern California, overturning cars and injuring several people.

Around a million people woke up early Saturday to warnings telling them to “seek shelter” after the warning was expanded to include parts of neighboring San Mateo County.

Meteorologists have since confirmed that a tornado ripped through Scotts Valley, an hour and a half south of San Francisco.

Several people were treated for minor injuries after cars overturned on Mount Hermon Road, KION reports.

A frightening video showed drivers struggling to maintain control of their cars in the middle of the road amid high winds and fallen trees.

Another clip taken in Scotts Valley showed the powerful wind funnel kicking up branches and debris as it raged across a Target parking lot.

Gusts reaching speeds of up to 80 mph (130 km/h) also brought down power lines, causing power outages for around 221,000 people, with tens of thousands still without power.

The stormy conditions are the result of a strong atmospheric river that has hit the west coast.

In San Francisco, roofs were damaged and trees were uprooted in gale force winds.

According to the weather service, which is currently investigating whether a tornado actually occurred, there has not been a tornado in the area since 2005.

“This was the first warning of a possible tornado in San Francisco.” “I would guess that there was no clear signature on the radar for a warning in 2005,” said Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the Weather Service in Monterey, California.

Due to the fast-moving storm, residents were urged to seek shelter, but few people in the area have basements.

“The most important thing we tell people in the city is to put up as many walls as possible between ourselves and the outside world,” said meteorologist Dalton Behringer.

The tornado warning was issued at 5:51 a.m. and also included a warning of possible pea-sized hail.

The warning expired around 6:15 a.m., but winds of 83 mph were recorded at San Francisco International Airport at 2:09 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, California records an average of 11 tornadoes per year.

Due to the increased risk of flooding, San Francisco residents continue to be urged to avoid coastal areas until Monday morning.

It comes just days after the City by the Bay issued its first tsunami warning.

A severe earthquake off the coast of Northern California triggered the alarm.

At least 5.3 million people in California were under a tsunami warning following the earthquake, the US Geological Survey said.

It was felt as far away as San Francisco, where residents felt a rolling motion for several seconds. Small aftershocks followed.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
