Scattered showers today, major risk over the weekend

Scattered showers today, major risk over the weekend

RADAR CONTROL: A line of showers and thunderstorms extending from Red Bay to Jackson Mississippi will move further east this morning. Occasional rain and some thunderstorms are expected over the next few hours.

TODAY: Occasional showers and a few thunderstorms are expected, highs around 60°C with areas of mixed fog. The wind increases as our pressure gradient increases ahead of our next system. Expect winds from the southeast at 10-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

ALABAMA WEEKEND: The Deep South is likely facing the greatest threat of severe weather in a long time. A dynamic system across the southern Plains will bring us the potential for severe storms Saturday afternoon into the night. Damaging winds, tornadoes and hail up to a quarter of an inch are possible. The SPC has set a Level 3 risk out of 5 for Pickens, Greene, Sumter and Marengo counties, a Level 2 mild risk out of 5 for much of central AL, and a marginal risk for areas east of HWY 431. There is potential for a severe thunderstorm outbreak anywhere on Saturday evening and overnight. Should showers occur during the day before the mainline is laid, the impact could be slightly limited due to convective contamination and an overall more stable atmosphere. You have several options for receiving notifications as this threat spreads into the night.

Next week looks much calmer, with a weak frontal system bringing colder air and possibly a shower mid-week. At the end of the week, the first days of 2025, it looks much colder here.
