School closings for Friday, December 20 in Metro Detroit

Another Canadian snowstorm is moving into Michigan and the Detroit area, bringing some snow to almost everyone in the state, meaning many school districts may have an early start to the weekend.

Friday marks less than a week before Christmas and Hanukkah and just one day after the winter solstice, meaning winter is officially here.

How much snow will there be?

You don’t need a snow blower. At least for most of us in Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan, it will be an inch or two. The further north you go, the more snow you will see.

This is how much snow we will see:

  • Port Huron 3.0 inches.
  • Mount Clemens 2.8″
  • Lapeer: 2.8 inches.
  • Ionia 2.5 inches.
  • Flint: 2.3 inches.
  • Pontiac 2.4 inch.
  • Lansing 1.9 inches.
  • Detroit: 1.8 inches.
  • Ann Arbor: 1.8 inches.
  • Jackson: 1.1 inches.
  • Albion 1.0 inch.
  • Adrian .4 inches.
  • Monroe .4 inches.

Unless you live further north, leave the snow blower in the garage. This should be easy to clear up.

When will the snow stop?

The snowfall will taper off around 8 or 9 a.m., but we will see snow off and on most of the day, eventually stopping before the drive home Friday.

How long will the snow last?

Once the snowfall ends, temperatures will remain below freezing for the next few days.

We expect the temperature to remain around 20°C throughout the weekend and more snow is expected early next week.

By the time we reach Christmas, however, temperatures will begin to climb above freezing. That doesn’t mean everything will melt away – but there may not be a white Christmas this year.
