School Closings Forecast for Tuesday, December 3rd

School Closings Forecast for Tuesday, December 3rd

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — With 6 to 12 inches of snow overnight in some lakefront communities and more snow on the way, some closures are possible Tuesday.

School closures and delays

The snow arrived somewhat slowly on Monday, causing schools to remain open. However, as the day progressed and the snow set in, road conditions deteriorated in places, particularly along the lakeshore. The Winter storm warning has been extended until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning for Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties.

MSP: 17 vehicles piled up on I-94 near Hartford

A quick blast of snow is expected to fall from north to south through the lakeshore counties overnight and could quickly drop 1 to 3 inches or more. In areas where there was already heavy snowfall on Monday, this increases the likelihood that some schools will be closed on Tuesday.

FORECAST: Ottawa and Kent counties

Parts of Grand Haven and Port Sheldon parishes received 7 to 12 inches or more of snow Monday. A few extra centimeters are possible overnight. Although closures are not necessarily expected here, there is a non-zero chance. Grand Haven, West Ottawa, Holland and Hamilton have a slim chance (2/5).

FORECAST: Southern area

The best chance for school closures on Tuesday will be in western Allegan and Van Buren counties, where heavy snow will continue throughout the afternoon. Additional snowfall is expected here, particularly in Van Buren County, and with the secondary snowfall falling through overnight, it could be enough to shut down some counties. There is currently a moderate chance (3/5) for Saugatuck, Fennville, Glenn, South Haven, Bloomingdale, Bangor, Covert, Hartford and Lawrence.

FORECAST: Northern area

As the snow area mentioned above falls southward overnight, a few inches of snow is possible along the lakeshore north of Muskegon. Therefore, there is a very small (1/5) chance of closures here.

The look forward

Wind and lake snow are still expected over a wide area Wednesday night into Thursday, representing the next significant opportunity for school closures.
