Severe storms are possible until Saturday evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – We have declared initial weather alert days for Saturday, December 28th and Sunday, December 29th due to the possibility of some strong to severe storms developing.

Storms with heavy rainfall could produce damaging winds, some tornadoes and large hail. We are also forecasting a good 5cm of rainfall for the coming system, so we need to be mindful of a localized risk of flooding.

The main time frame for severe risk appears to be between 3pm Saturday afternoon and 7am Sunday morning.

For your Friday, First Alert AccuTrack shows rain and a few storms moving across the state as an initial low pressure system pushes across the eastern United States. However, temperatures remained quite cool today thanks to persistent clouds and the influence of a wedge fortress to the east, a warm front with the incoming system will help temperatures rise into the upper 50s and lower 60s this evening. The warmest part of the day is likely to be just before midnight. The serious threat is limited today, with the greatest chance of a strong storm in west central Alabama. Most of us will simply have to contend with wet and stormy conditions. Winds will continue to increase from the southeast at speeds of 10-20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph possible.

The next big thing: Another developing storm system will move our way Saturday, bringing heavy rain and a possible severe storm threat. With the rain easing tonight, Saturday should start fairly calmly, with just a few scattered showers. The major threat for Saturday depends heavily on what happens during the day, as there will be chaotic storms with several possible showers starting in the afternoon and lasting into the overnight hours. If widespread heavy rain develops before the unstable air from the south is allowed to move northwards late tomorrow afternoon into the evening, this would help limit the serious threat as our main concern is simply the risk of flooding. In any case, make sure you have a reliable way to receive clocks and alerts, such as: B. via a NOAA weather radio and the WBRC First Alert Weather app. Any threat of rain and storms should end after sunrise Sunday and drier weather will persist through Monday.

However, the wet weather should be over by New Year’s Day and we will start 2025 with a colder weather pattern. Highs will range from the 60s early in the week to the upper 40s and lower 50s through the first few days of the year. We also have an initial warning of renewed freezing temperatures for next Thursday morning.
