Severe weather in Texas: Thousands still without power after devastating storms near Houston

Crews have begun restoring power and lighting to those who lost power during Saturday’s devastating storms, which triggered a deadly tornado and left several counties with debris-filled roads.

CenterPoint Energy said Sunday morning that fewer than 2,300 people were without power in the greater Houston area. Brazoria County, Cypress and Galveston were hardest hit.

According to the live outage tracker, nearly 33,000 had their power back on at last check.

The company says that due to damage caused by a strong tornado, several utility poles and equipment will need to be replaced and conductors re-hung.

By the end of the day on Monday, power will be restored to residents of the Bolivar Peninsula.

Officials said flood crews and equipment have been dispatched to assist with ongoing recovery efforts.

Customers are urged to err on the side of caution and exercise caution following severe storms. Also note the following safety tips:

Stay away from downed power lines and debris areas. Live power lines may not be visible under the rubble.

Do not walk in flooded areas or standing water. Remember that wet branches can conduct electricity.

Keep your distance from working teams. There can be many hidden dangers to the public on construction sites, and distracting crews can lead to accidents.
