Mariah Carey has revealed that she rakes in $3 million a year from royalties and streams for her signature Christmas song All I want for Christmas is you. The title was released in 1994 and according to Fandomwire, it had grossed a whopping $60 million as of 2017.

However, a significant portion of social media users said the song was far too famous to simply fetch $3 million. Some claimed she was robbed, while others suspected it could be much more than she let on.

Forbes estimates that Mariah Carey, aka the Queen of Christmas, rakes in between $2.5 million and $3 million in royalties from the hit track every year. The Economist puts it at around $2.5 million to $2.6 million, while the New York Post says it could be more than $3 million.

According to Forbes, the $3 million a year is in addition to the “$60 million in royalties the singer received when the song was first released nearly three decades ago in 1994.”

Gary Trust, Billboard’s managing director of charts and operations, told The Post:

“It’s the gift that keeps on giving – to her fans and to Mariah. It’s #1 on Billboard’s Best Christmas Songs of All Time chart. Of all the Christmas songs ever released, this is the greatest. The table reflects that.” .”

What’s notable is that Mariah Carey’s hit song had to slowly climb the charts to reach the Hot 100. At first it couldn’t even be considered an equal because it wasn’t released as a standalone single; it was part of an album.

“And back then, the Hot 100 rules stated that to be on the Hot 100 you had to be a physically available single,” Trust added.

The track is particularly booming during the Christmas season, as it lands in the Billboard Hot 100 almost every year.
