Shooting suspect Brian Thompson was valedictorian and graduated from U. Penn

The man police suspect of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was valedictorian of a prestigious Maryland prep school and graduated cum laude from an Ivy League school.

Luigi Mangione, 26, graduated at the top of his class in 2016 from the private Gilman School in Baltimore, PEOPLE confirms. The all-boys school lists high school tuition at $37,690 per year.

He then studied engineering and computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating cum laude with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in 2020, according to his LinkedIn page.

Police believe Mangione is the gunman who killed Thompson on Dec. 4 in midtown Manhattan. He was discovered by an employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was allegedly found carrying a 9mm “ghost” gun and a silencer similar to the weapon used to kill Thompson. Altoona police arrested him for weapons possession.

At Penn, Mangione took courses on advanced algorithms, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics and machine learning, among others, according to LinkedIn. He also claimed to be the founder of UPGRADE, Penn’s first video game development club.

The Maryland native listed his job on LinkedIn as a data engineer at automotive listing site TrueCar, working in Santa Monica, California. His last known residence before the shooting was in Honolulu, Hawaii, police said.
