‘SNL’: Martin Short Joins the 5-Timers Club with Cameos from Tina Fey, Emma Stone, Tom Hanks and More

Tom Hanks opened Saturday’s holiday episode of “Saturday Night Live,” donning a Five Timer jacket as he prepared to introduce host Martin Short. He noted that he founded the club himself in 1990. But he was far from the last celebrity to show up to usher Short into the exclusive club, as the episode featured the most star-studded five-timer sketch of all time.

As the cold opening of “SNL” continued, the cameos poured in: Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Wiig, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Melissa McCarthy, John Mulaney and Jimmy Fallon all showed up.

Hanks addressed the club’s popularity, saying it eventually became “a brilliantly lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.”

As Fey entered, Short quipped, “You’re one of the rarest things in Hollywood, a writer attractive enough to be in front of the camera.” She shot back, “And you’re one of the least rare things in Hollywood, a loud man.”

About the drinks at the club, Rudd told Short: “It’s just like yours. Super sweet, and after a few sips you think, ‘No, I understand.'”

Fey then subjected Short to a test before his introduction. “Name three current cast members,” she said. “I don’t know,” Short said. “Right and that was the whole test,” Fey concluded.

Baldwin’s appearance only slightly added to the “30 Rock” vibe between him and Fey, and the actor said of his numerous “SNL” appearances, “They call me when they need someone to play a Republican because of my face.” , my voice and my strong daddy vibes.”

Johansson’s performance also got a surprise appearance from her husband Colin Jost, who stood behind her – seemingly to Johansson’s genuine surprise and probably as a goof.

When it was established that everyone in the five-player club could be honest, the A-listers happily chimed in.

Rudd: “Ant-Man’s powers are not good.”

Fey: “It’s me who flies these drones. All.”

Hanks: “I never had COVID.”

Johansson: “I have COVID right now.”

Baldwin: “I have way too many children.”

And when Mulaney appeared, Short joked about the short-lived sitcom “Mulaney,” in which he co-starred with the former “SNL” writer. Short criticized Mulaney’s meteoric rise after the cancellation of “Mulaney”: “You came back strong. Then you crashed and burned. Then you came back strong and we’re all excited to see what happens next.”

The “jacket boy” this time – the celebrity who isn’t part of the five-a-side club but appears to be bringing in the jacket – was Jimmy Fallon, who said of his appearance: “I can only stay for a moment, then I have to.” hosting another game show and laughing at my own jokes.”

The most notable absence from the whole ordeal was Short’s close friend and Only Murders in the Building co-star Steve Martin.
