Snow is returning to Metro Detroit — here’s how much to expect and when

Light snow continues this morning in the Thumb region, mostly north of I-69. These morning showers could result in up to half an inch of dust accumulation. Otherwise, it’s a windy start with wind chill values in the teens.

Today will be mostly cloudy and temperatures will be in the low to mid 30s as winds pick up. We stay relatively dry, a few flakes fly during the day. An arctic front will move through the region tonight. Short but heavy snow showers are expected along this arctic surf or air. The heaviest snowfall appears to occur between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Some of these snow showers will drop quick accumulations and significantly reduce visibility on the roads. These are called snow squalls and can result in brief but quick whiteout conditions. Travel with caution this evening.

Sunset is at 5:01 p.m

Snowfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible through tomorrow morning, with smaller amounts occurring closer to the state line and larger amounts occurring in Thumb and isolated areas where repeat snow squalls may occur. Overnight and Thursday, westerly/northwest winds will blow with gusts between 35 and 45 mph, and wind chill values will fall into the single digits by Thursday morning. Depending on how many road crews are able to clear and treat overnight, I would expect remaining slippery areas Thursday morning, particularly on side roads and elevated areas. Otherwise we dry out later on Thursday. A freezing cold Friday morning with low temperatures in the teens and further single digit wind chills. However, we will get above 40°C from Sunday into early next week, with a chance of rain again on Monday.

Widespread light snow will occur Wednesday afternoon and evening, resulting in minor snow accumulations of no more than two inches Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected Wednesday night and Thursday. Wind chill values will fall into the teens and single digits Wednesday evening and Thursday. A slight warming trend is forecast for this weekend. There is a chance of rain on Monday as temperatures rise to over 40°C.
