Some of CBS Sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel’s most historic calls are on the air

SALT LAKE CITY – CBS Sports anchor and commentator Greg Gumbel died Friday at age 78 after a battle with cancer. Gumbel worked in broadcasting for over 50 years, most notably becoming the voice of the NCAA Selection Show for the college basketball tournament in March.

We look back at some of the best calls and moments of Gumbel’s career, including some with a local connection.

John Stockton’s game winner

One of the best calls in Utah Jazz history and the most memorable for Utahns was when John Stockton hit a 3-pointer in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals to defeat the Rockets and get the Jazz into the NBA for the first time -Finale to send time in history.

His words, “John Stockton sends the Utah Jazz to the NBA Finals,” can be repeated non-stop by any Jazz fan.

Zach Wilson gets a touchdown

Former BYU Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson goes for a touchdown on the first reception of his career, and Gumbel tells the trick play perfectly.

Joe Flacco TD call

Some fans say this is their favorite Gumbel call ever, highlighting a great piece by Jacoby Jones, who also passed away earlier this year. “Flacco steps up and throws deep down the other sideline… caught! Touchdown Jacoby Jones!”

Start of the NCAA Selection Shows

After joining CBS in 1989, Gumbel’s voice was the show’s introduction on Selection Sunday before March Madness.

Cromartie kick return

The longest kick return in NFL history was highlighted by a great call by Gumbel. “Cromartie at high speed on the right sideline.”

Gumbel’s reaction to the longest field goal in NFL history as it bounced off the crossbar for the win was nothing short of perfect. “On the way… it bounces off the crossbar. …and it’s good! Oh my God!”
