Stauber scores the first NHL shutout, the Utah Hockey Club passes the Golden Knights

It was Stauber’s debut for Utah, his seventh NHL game and his first since February 22, 2023 with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Nick Schmaltz scored his first two goals of the season and Logan Cooley, Clayton Keller and Alexander Kerfoot each had a goal and an assist for Utah (10-10-4), which lost 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

Ilya Samsonov made 22 saves for Vegas (15-7-3), ending its five-game point streak (4-0-1). The Golden Knights defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 on Friday.

Utah scored four goals in the first period.

Keller made it 1-0 at 5:33, scoring from the left faceoff circle after Barrett Hayton pushed the puck away from Shea Theodore and passed to Keller to initiate the rush.

Kerfoot extended the lead to 2-0 at 9:26 by scoring a shorthanded goal after intercepting Samsonov’s clearance attempt over the blue line and firing into an empty net. A flying Samsonov got a piece of it, but the puck trickled in.

Cooley made it 4-0 at 18:44 by scoring on a deflection from the slot.

Michael Carcone quickly scored his first goal of the season to make it 5-0 after 1:02 minutes of the second period.

Schmaltz scored his second goal at 5:28 of the power play to make the score 6-0, firing a wrist shot from the right circle into the open net.
