Stephen Colbert defends Pete Hegseth over workplace drinking allegations: ‘It’s a show that starts at 6am on weekends!’

Stephen Colbert defended Pete Hegseth as the former Fox News weekend host faces allegations that he showed up to work with alcohol on his breath. According to the CBS anchor the most Weekend morning hosts are likely to go on air while still drunk from the night before.

To kick off his monologue on Wednesday’s show, Colbert suggested that anyone rooting for Donald Trump this holiday season might consider getting him a new nominee for defense secretary as the Hegseth scandal continues to grow.

In addition to allegations of alcohol problems, Hegseth was also accused of sexual assault. But Colbert was able to stave off the drinking.

“Come on,” he said angrily. “Light Up!” actually looking hungover!”

Colbert stated that according to reports regarding these alcohol allegations, none of the sources could recall a time when Hegseth missed work because of alcohol consumption.

“And that’s great, because you know what everyone says when the drunk guy shows up at work: ‘Oh, good, you’re here,'” Colbert said dryly.

The “Late Show” host also poked fun at how Hegseth has dropped “hints” about his drinking habits on the show, like the time the former Fox News host said that champagne in the morning is “the problem” of a hangover “fixes it because you drink a little more champagne… and then your problem will be gone!”

“Yeah, he’s right,” Colbert said with a laugh. “He doesn’t have a drinking problem. He just keeps drinking and the problem goes away. It’s Pete Hegseth’s 12-step program. Step one: Admit that you are powerless over alcohol. Then chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, tequila! It works for him.”
