Stormy weather returns to Western Washington on Friday and Saturday

A low pressure system moving ashore in Northern California will bring light rain showers to Western Washington on Thursday.

Temperatures will be noticeably cooler on Thursday, reaching highs around 40°C. Precipitation amounts will be light, with snow levels above 3,500 feet in the Washington Cascades.

A much stronger system will hit the Pacific Northwest on Friday, bringing gusty winds at times, widespread lowland rain and mountain snow.

Friday’s rain will hit the coast during the morning hours and spread to the Puget Sound area by midday. Areas surrounding Puget Sound could see 0.5 to 1.00 inches of rain by Saturday morning.

There will be gusty winds on Friday morning. The coast, Admiralty Inlet and northern Puget Sound, which typically experience stronger winds, could see gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range through Saturday.

Snow levels will remain around 3,500 feet through Saturday and fall to around 2,500 feet by Sunday. The higher mountain passes (Stevens, White and Blewett) could see 5 to 10 cm of snow through Sunday.

Coastal flooding is also possible this weekend, particularly at high tide.

Sunday afternoon will be drier, with further showers expected early next week.

The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting warmer and wetter than normal conditions for the week before Christmas. Long-range forecast models show no signs of lowland snow for at least the next two weeks.
