“Stressed” Amazon driver leaves 80 packages in Mass. Woods days before Christmas

A “stressed” Amazon delivery driver from Massachusetts left about 80 packages in a wooded area in Lakeville, Massachusetts, police said.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday, December 22nd, Lakeville Police Sgt. Shawn Robert noticed items left behind in a wooded area, police said in a statement. Roberts examined the crime scene and found three large tote bags full of Amazon packages.

Police officers loaded the bags into a pickup truck and conducted an inventory at the Lakeville Police Department. After counting over 80 packages, they contacted a local Amazon distribution center in Middleborough, Massachusetts to return them. There were no reports of lost or stolen packages in the area.

“I would like to commend Sgt. Shawn Robert for discovering these unattended packages during a routine patrol,” Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins said Monday, Dec. 23. “Sgt. Robert likely saved many local residents a Christmas headache by noticing these bags and hopefully returning them to Amazon in time for a holiday delivery.”

In a second statement on Monday, December 23, an Amazon driver arrived at the department and reported that he was the person who left the packages on the side of the road at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, ” because they were stressed,” police said.

Police are not pressing charges against the driver, who has not been publicly identified. The driver planned to report the incident to his supervisor, police said.

“I am proud of the manner in which our Lakeville police officers handled and investigated this matter,” Perkins said in the update. “At this time, we are not seeking criminal charges and view this as a human resources matter for Amazon.”

Earlier this week, a FedEx contract worker in Alabama was arrested for allegedly dumping vacation packages in the woods and on the side of the road. Latavion Lewis was taken into custody on charges of organized fraud, grand theft and illegal dumping and is no longer employed by FedEx.
