Strong storm brings rain, wind and mountain snow

Widespread rain and breezy winds will impact Western Washington on Friday as a strong weather system moves into the region.

Increasing rain is expected throughout the day, with gusty winds developing after sunset. High temperatures will be near average for this time of year.

Light showers will continue around Puget Sound Friday morning. Rain will become heavier and more intense through the afternoon.

The widespread rain will transition to occasional showers Friday through Saturday. Scattered thunderstorms are possible Saturday, particularly along the Washington coast.

Winds will be breezy Friday afternoon, with the strongest gusts blowing overnight and into the early hours of Saturday.

The strongest winds will be in the usual locations: San Juan Islands, Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island, western Whatcom and Skagit counties, and the Washington coast. Gusts will reach speeds between 35 and 45 miles per hour, with isolated gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour.

This storm will not cause widespread power outages, but there could be some isolated areas that become dark overnight.

Snow levels will be at 4,000 feet Friday morning but will continue to fall to around 2,500 feet by Sunday. 10 to 20 cm of fresh powder is expected over White and Stevens by Sunday. 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected over Snoqualmie Pass.

A coastal flood warning is in effect for the Washington coast.

The greatest impact will occur around late morning flooding on Friday and Saturday. Flooding of two to three feet could affect roads and businesses near the coast. Large waves are also expected during this time as the weekend storm moves through.

After getting through Saturday the weather will calm down on Sunday leaving us mostly dry with a few early showers. If you’re heading to the Sunday Night Football Seahawks game against the Green Bay Packers, it looks cool, dry and cloudy.

It may rain at times from Monday to Wednesday. Another dry pattern sets in on Thursday and Friday next week.
