Strong winds, big surf, showers and thick fog are forecast

In some areas, dense fog reduces visibility to less than a quarter mile. Commuters should allow time for the trip and those heading to the airport should check with airlines about possible delays.

A fast-moving storm in the Pacific will bring scattered showers, cool temperatures and strong winds to the county today.

There will be isolated showers across the county, tapering off by Christmas morning. Rainfall totals will be light, between 0.10 and 0.30 inches. A wind warning goes into effect at 4 p.m. and lasts until 2 a.m. Wednesday. Sustained westerly winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with isolated gusts up to 60 mph over foothills, mountains and desert areas.

This storm will also lower temperatures. Inland, highs will drop by 10 degrees and settle in the low 60s. Mountain temperatures will drop to 50°C and high desert temperatures will drop to 70°C.

The High Surf Advisory has been extended until 4pm on Christmas Day. Waves can reach heights of 6 to 10 feet and occasionally reach up to 13 feet. Strong currents and coastal erosion are a concern, so caution is advised – leave surfing to experienced people and always remain vigilant near the ocean.

Temperatures will rise again by the weekend, with slight warming in coastal and valley areas. Mountains and deserts will experience significant warming, with temperatures rising nearly 15 degrees above the seasonal average by the weekend.

Highest values on Christmas Eve:
Coast: 63-68°
Inland: 67-72°
Mountains: 62-70°
Deserts: 79-81°
