Strong winds, heavy rain ahead – Boston news, weather, sports

Okay, there’s a lot to explore this morning. As temperatures dip below freezing north of the Mass Pike, we will be on the lookout for some slick spots this morning as patchy black ice is possible due to freezing moisture or even a touch of freezing drizzle. A winter weather warning is in effect for parts of the interior due to these icy areas. The map below shows where temperatures will favor icy spots at 6 a.m.

The advisory ends at 10am as temperatures begin to rise above freezing…barely.

This afternoon, highs in Boston are slowly approaching 40 degrees, staying in the 30s in the northwest of the city and reaching well into the 40s throughout the Southeast Massif.

The big rainmaker begins to arrive overnight this evening as showers spread again, particularly tomorrow morning. Temperatures will slowly rise from south to north as the air becomes milder again. In fact, tomorrow morning the southerly breeze will begin to pick up and the warmth will break in at that time. Temperatures will climb into the upper 60s tomorrow as waves of rain continue to pour in.

We will be watching for road flooding/poor drainage with localized downpours tomorrow and tomorrow evening, particularly along the front as a firehose of moisture flows through tomorrow evening. Much of southern New England can expect 1.5 to 3.0 inches of rain.

Along and ahead of this cold front, winds will also increase, with gusts of 30-50 mph in the late afternoon and over 45-55 mph in the evening. The strongest winds will be along the coast, with the strongest gusts likely around Buzzards Bay and the Cape and Islands. Isolated to isolated power outages are possible.

The storm will be off the coast by midnight as colder, drier air moves back in on Thursday. We’ll stay dry until Sunday afternoon, with a chance of a few showers late afternoon just before or after sunset.
