Surprisingly, the Yankees’ three-time All-Star was expected to sign with the AL East rival Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays aren’t known for spending big in free agency, but if there’s one thing they love to do, it’s giving it to the New York Yankees.

The 2024 season was a difficult one for Tampa Bay, which missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018. Additionally, the Yankees won the American League pennant for the first time since 2009, turning the division’s power dynamic back New York’s direction.

It’s not like the Rays could land a Juan Soto or even another Yankees free agent target like Max Fried or Christian Walker. But it would be a perfect move for the Rays to take an offshoot of the Yankees’ roster and rejuvenate them to make a playoff run possible.

Fortunately, the Yankees are preparing to part ways with three-time All-Star Anthony Rizzo, who had a disastrous, injury-shortened 2024 season. Rizzo is likely seeking a one-year deal and at this point just needs to prove he still belongs in the big leagues as a full-time starter.

NorthJersey.com’s Andrew Tredinnick predicted Rizzo would sign with the Rays, which would give him a left-handed bat and much-needed veteran leadership.

“A chance for Rizzo to return to his home state, mentor a young squad and step in when needed,” Tredinnick said.

Rizzo, 35, hasn’t been an All-Star since 2016, so no one is saying his best days are ahead of him. However, he was excellent in 2022 with an OPS+ of 130 and also had a great start to the 2023 season before a concussion wiped out his entire year.

If Rizzo finds some of his old self again, Tampa Bay would love to have him on their side. Especially if he can help them defeat the Bronx Bombers in typical underdog Rays fashion.
