Suspect arrested after fatal multi-vehicle accident

SALT LAKE CITY — A pregnant woman is dead and a shooting suspect is in custody following a multi-vehicle crash in Salt Lake City on Tuesday evening, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

According to police, they were called to the multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of 8000 West and State Route 201 on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. When they arrived at the scene of the accident, they were alerted to the driver of a vehicle, a Toyota Sequoia. This was the suspect in a shooting that occurred before the collision.

The driver, about whom the police were warned, had fled the scene of the accident. A nationwide manhunt was underway until the suspect was arrested at 10:52 p.m

According to West Valley City police, the shooting occurred at the Tuscany Cove Apartments at 8:40 p.m. A 26-year-old man was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Witnesses told investigators that the victim’s brother shot him after an argument. The suspect is 20-year-old Sasa Scott Hamilton. He was arrested for aggravated discharge of a weapon and obstruction.

Hamilton also admitted to investigators, according to court documents, that after the accident he disassembled the gun he used in the shooting and disposed of the parts in various yards.

Another pregnant driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. She later died in hospital. Her name has not been released, but we know the victim was 34 years old.

All other drivers involved in the collision suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Officials say the State Bureau of Investigation and the Utah Highway Patrol are helping investigate the collision, while the West Valley City Police Department is conducting the shooting investigation.
