Sydney Sweeney takes down body shamers with Christy Martin biopic training video

Sydney Sweeney hit back at the body shamers who frequent her social media accounts on Friday with a video showing her workout routine from her upcoming Christy Martin biopic.

The clip, shared on Instagram, began with a series of abusive and sexist social media posts about her body, followed by footage of her training in the gym for the role.

“She looks very stocky,” one comment said. “Nothing ‘unbelievable’ here… Maybe an Ozempic candidate,” another person wrote. In the following stills, Sweeney is seen lifting giant tires, lifting weights and boxing in the ring. Although she doesn’t say anything and the post doesn’t contain a headline, the message is clear: body shaming, be damned.

Sweeney opened up about her past body insecurities in an interview with Glamor UK back in 2023. “One of the questions I get is, ‘Are you a feminist?’ I find strength in embracing the body I have. That’s sexy and powerful and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I’m in a Rolling Stones video. How cool and iconic is that? I felt so good,” she explained.

Sweeney later added: “Well, especially when it comes to red carpet pictures and they say, ‘Sydney Sweeney is showing off her bust’ or ‘Sydney Sweeney is wearing a scandalous dress,’ then I say, ‘I’m wearing that.’ the exact same dress someone else would wear! “I only have tits. And if someone else wore it, they would say, ‘Oh, so elegant and so well-mannered.'”

The untitled Christy Martin film also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor and Chad L. Coleman.

The film’s official description reads: “The film tells the incredible true story of the formidable Christy Martin, who rose to fame as America’s most successful female boxer in the 1990s. A naturally gifted fighter, her life changed in 1989 when she met her manager and future husband, Jim Martin. She broke boundaries and was the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.”

“Christy’s charisma, good looks and unwavering resilience in the ring earned her a large fan base and propelled her to become welterweight champion of the world. Behind this cultured public persona, Christy battled personal demons, toxic relationships and an attempt on her life, proving that a fighter’s toughest victories are not always won in the ring.”

Sweeney shared a first look at the film in October. “Well the cat is out of the bag thanks to some treats in the bushes so here’s a little BTS from my movie I’m working on,” Sweeny wrote on Instagram alongside two behind-the-scenes photos. “Over the past few months, I have been training intensively to bring to life the story of an incredible woman – a true champion who fought battles both in and out of the ring.”

“Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and it is an honor to follow in her footsteps and share her powerful story with all of you. “More on this coming soon,” Sweeney concluded.
