Joe Biden was asked about Austin Tice, the American journalist missing in Syria, to which he replied:We believe he is alive. We believe we can get him back, but we don’t have direct evidence of that yet.”

Asked about a possible rescue operation to recover Tice, the president said the U.S. would first need to “identify where he is.”

Tice, a Houston native whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, McClatchy newspapers and other media outlets, disappeared in August 2012 at a checkpoint in a contested area west of Damascus.

A video released weeks later showed him blindfolded, being held by gunmen and saying, “Oh, Jesus.” He has not been heard from since.

On Friday, his family said they had a new source who told them Tice was alive and being treated well. According to CNN, US officials contacted Syrian opposition forces about Tice in hopes of learning more about his whereabouts.

Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, has just made another statement in front of the cameras.

Most of this overlapped with the earlier written communiqué, but this part was new. Note: Almost a million Syrian nationals live in Germany, many of whom arrived during the 2015-2016 refugee influx. It is the largest Syrian diaspora outside the Middle East:

“Today we stand with all Syrians who are full of hope for a free, fair and safe Syria, whether they live in Syria itself or abroad. They have all followed the events of the last few days with great excitement.

They sincerely hope that there is now a chance to rebuild the country and embark on the long and difficult path to reconciliation. You wonder what will happen now. Because there are also radical and extremist forces among the resistance fighters.

What is now important is that law and order can quickly prevail in Syria – law and order must be established there; that all religious communities, all ethnic groups and minorities enjoy protection; that a life of dignity and self-determination must be made possible – that is how we will judge the next Syrian government.”
