SOAD went on hiatus in 2006, with the various band members splitting up to pursue side projects, before reforming in 2011 for a series of European festival dates. A series of festival appearances and occasional headlining gigs followed over the next decade. Although they have hinted at returning to the studio to work on a follow-up to their 2005 double release, Mezmerize And HypnotizeAt press time, there was no information regarding the band’s as-yet-untitled sixth studio album.

The group — vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan — released their first new music in 15 years in late 2020: “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.”

SOAD accompanied the Deftones for their first After Dark performance on August 17th at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco with Deftones, The Mars Volta and Viagra Boys. This was System’s only other appearance in 2025 outside of their headlining slot at the Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas in April.
