Tesla recalls 700,000 vehicles due to faulty tire pressure warning

What’s new

Tesla is recalling nearly 700,000 vehicles in the US due to a malfunction of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which may fail to alert the driver to low tire pressure, increasing the risk of an accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Thursday that the recall affects certain models, including the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3 and 2020-2025 Model Y.

The NHTSA said the problem is related to the TPMS warning light, which may not remain illuminated continuously between driving cycles, preventing drivers from receiving timely warning when their tire pressure is dangerously low.

The latest recall highlights Tesla’s ongoing challenges in ensuring vehicle safety.

While the company has been proactive in addressing problems – often through over-the-air software updates – the frequency of recalls remains a concern.

Why are Tesla vehicles being recalled?

In February, nearly 2.2 million Teslas were recalled because some dashboard warning lights were too small to be easily seen by drivers.

Tesla has also faced several recalls related to its highly anticipated Cybertruck.

The company’s electric pickup, which made its long-awaited customer debut in November 2023, has now had seven recalls.

The last recall in November affected around 2,400 Cybertruck units.

While these recalls raise concerns about quality control, Tesla’s use of over-the-air updates has allowed the company to resolve many issues remotely.

How does Tesla solve its recall problems?

But as the automaker rapidly expands and new vehicle models hit the road, including the Cybertruck, the frequency of recalls has drawn increasing attention.

Newsweek contacted Tesla via email on Friday and asked for a response.

According to the financial news agency, Tesla saw its share price fall by 5.04 percent in the premarket on Friday. Benzinga Pro.

What happens next

Tesla said the problem would be fixed with an over-the-air software update, a solution the company often uses to fix vehicle problems.

It added that owners’ notification letters will be sent starting February 15, 2025.

In the meantime, Tesla customers can reach the company’s support team or contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for more information.
