Texas transfer WR Johntay Cook II commits to Washington

Former Texas Wide receivers Johntay Cook II has committed to it Washingtonthrough the NCAA transfer portal. Cook spent two seasons at Texas and will have two more years of eligibility.

In the 2024 season, Cook recorded eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers were nearly identical to his true freshman season in 2023, when he recorded eight catches for 136 yards. However, he did not score a touchdown this season.

Before the 2024 season, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian praised Cook’s talent.

“Johntay can play any position on the field,” Sarkisian said. “I think he creates a lot of value for himself there. He’s a safe guy who understands our offense and has a really good feel for what we’re doing.

“I think he had a very good camp and I applauded him throughout the camp for the work he did because I think he made a lot of progress as well.”

Johntay Cook II played high school football at DeSoto (TX), where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 31 overall recruit and No. 3 wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting cycle On3 industry rankinga weighted average that takes into account all four major recruiting media companies.

Now Cook will look to reach his full potential with the Washington Huskies. Washington posted a 6-6 regular-season record this season under first-year head coach Jedd Fisch.

While the Huskies suffered their fair share of bumps and bruises, they also secured several outstanding victories, including victories over Big Ten opponents Michigan And USC. Now, with transfer talent like Cook at his side, Fisch will look to help Washington take another step forward next season.

The transfer portal officially opened on December 7th and will remain open until December 28th, although players from teams still playing in the postseason will be given an additional five-day window after the end of the season to enter the portal.
