The 11 biggest announcements from The Game Awards 2024

We were expecting some major reveals during this year’s 10th anniversary of The Game Awards, and in fact Geoff followed through with a whole host of announcements – some of which even we weren’t expecting.

We’ve seen plenty of highly anticipated new games and returns from favorite developers. The studio behind It Takes Two revealed another co-op action game, the creator of Shadow of the Colossus also announced a new untitled project. We finally got a look at Ciri as the protagonist of The Witcher 4, a proper trailer for Borderlands 4 and much more.

Elden Ring: Nightreign

What the hell is FromSoftware doing on a roguelike? One of the biggest announcements of the night was this standalone Elden Ring spin-off. It reuses many of the game’s familiar weapons and villains, but also adds a lot of new things, such as preset characters with their own unique abilities. That’s right, Souls now has ults. This definitely isn’t Elden Ring 2, but it could be the co-op action game that many Souls players have been looking forward to for years – assuming they’re more interested in combat than the complicated level design of the Dark Souls games. We tried Nightreign and found it to rely more on faster action and roguelike loot randomness than exploration. It will be released sometime in 2025.

Helldivers 2: Omens of Tyranny

Surprise! The Illuminati has come for Super Earth. We expected Helldivers 2’s third alien faction to appear all year, but Arrowhead still managed to pull off a surprise by revealing the mind-controlling aliens while also releasing the update. Omens of Tyranny is now available and, in addition to the new enemies, also features a four-person scout vehicle and new weapons.

Hazelight’s next co-op action adventure looks good. This is about two aspiring novelists who are trapped in simulations of their science fiction and fantasy worlds. We got our first look at Split Fiction courtesy of director Josef Fares and are amazed at the variety the studio has packed into it in just a few years. Split Fiction will be released on March 6, 2025.

Borderlands 4

A new planet, four new exterminators, a billion new weapons. Borderlands 4 definitely looks like a Borderlands game, only this time the setting looks a little more high-tech than Pandora’s, and you get to drive a pod racer straight out of the Star Wars prequels. The Brain-Off co-op mode is sure to be just as fun as the previous games, but the jury is still out on whether the solo mode will be a Borderlands 2-style laff riot or a Borderlands 3 snoozefest -Style will be.

Thief: The Dark Project, but do it in multiplayer. Warren Spector’s studio OtherSide is developing a PvPvE stealth game in which criminals compete to outwit guards and capture loot in a densely populated 1910s-style city. While players can sabotage and trap each other, this isn’t a multiplayer game that doesn’t involve headshots – even the NPC guards are designed to be challenging and are better outsmarted than fought. It’s coming in 2026 and we’ve already added it to the wishlist.

CD Projekt Red showed up while packing. The Witcher 4 is official, starring Geralt’s adopted daughter Ciri, and it looks like a lot of time has passed since The Witcher 3. We were treated to a lengthy six-minute cinematic trailer (nothing in the engine) featuring our new protag. A scenario we’re all too familiar with: Ciri’s latest hunt takes her to a village where she performs some kind of spooky sacrificial ritual. She interrupts the party and kills the monster threatening the village, but the people aren’t too happy about it. Imagine that. Nowadays a witcher cannot steal a coin from anyone.

It’s exciting that the makers of Overcooked are developing a cooperative escape room game, and interesting that it’s being published by No Man’s Sky studio Hello Games. Co-op horror has become a massive genre with hits like Lethal Company and Phasmophobia, but this looks like a lighthearted horror-comedy, which I’m fine with – and we already know that Ghost Town Games are masters of co-op. Chaos are (Overcooked). sold 50 million copies). We look forward to learning more about Stage Fright soon.

Project Century

The Yakuza studio announced two games at the show, but I think we can all agree that Project Century was the more exciting one. Set in 1915 Japan, the game is so early that it doesn’t have a proper name yet, but we can tell from the trailer that it’s likely an action game and not a turn-based RPG. It also looks a lot more violent than we’re used to from Ryu Ga Gotoku: a man is stabbed and a gallon of blood pours from his body.

Okay, we don’t even have a name for it yet, but those of us who still dream of playing Ico or Shadow of the Colossus are fully immersed in the enigmatic mech head launch here. This is one of the games that Epic is financing and publishing – under the leadership of Fumito Ueda – the deal was announced in 2020, so it’s been in the works for over four years.

The Long Dark 2: Blackfrost

After years of working on updates to its tundra survival game, Hinterland Studio is finally tackling a sequel. The Long Dark 2: Blackfrost will be released in Early Access in 2026 and this time in co-op mode, which is exciting to hear. The original adventure through the silent apocalypse was full of tense survival moments battling wolves and boiling drinking water long after dark. The sequel expands on the original with things like urban environments and customizable survivors.

Intergalactic: The Heretical Prophet

Naughty Dog is coming back with an entirely new world that it has been secretly working on for the past four years. The studio says the sci-fi adventure will have its “deepest gameplay” yet and will continue its storytelling ambitions with an emotional narrative. What we know so far is that it stars a bounty hunter named Jordan, stranded on a distant planet with little communication and hoping to escape his orbit.
