The 3 best NFL player prop bets for Sunday Night Football: Falcons at Commanders

The 3 best NFL player prop bets for Sunday Night Football: Falcons at Commanders

Looking through the NFL schedule earlier in the year, it was a little strange that the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders had such a solid spot in Week 17 as the playoff picture began to take shape.

Neither team was able to achieve a double-digit win total, and the Commanders weren’t expected to come close to making the playoffs. This was about Kirk Cousins’ return to DC. No longer.

Washington could be in the No. 7 seed in the NFC heading into this game, and Atlanta still controls its fate in the NFC South, which would require a win in this game.

Even within a single NFL game, there are numerous betting markets.

From spreads and totals to touchdown scorers and player props, everything is at your fingertips. It can be a lot to sort out.

So which bets stand out as the Falcons take on the Commanders on Sunday Night Football? Let’s take a look at FanDuel Sportsbook’s NFL betting odds to find out.

Choosing the best player props from Sunday Night Football

Drake London over 5.5 receptions (+108)
Drake London Anytime Touchdown (+145)

Drake London didn’t even finish the final 20 minutes of Sunday’s win over the New York Giants, but he was peppered during Michael Penix Jr.’s debut.

In London there were eight destinations, representing 30.8%. That’s up from a 27.0% share this season, where he was really competing against Darnell Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud for Kirk Cousins’ affections toward the end of Cousins’ tenure.

On Friday, the runway was paved for the former top-10 pick to keep rolling. Washington ruled out stud corner Marshon Lattimore (hamstring injury), leaving Benjamin St-Juste’s terrible coverage grade of 50.1 (per Pro Football Focus) as the best option to check him out.

The Commies boast the Fire’s 21st ranked pass defense, even with some help from Lattimore.

In general, London’s props for this entirely new era seem suppressed. Cousins ended his run as Atlanta’s starter with a 1:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Falcons’ -8.1% above-expected success rate (PROE) could be much higher considering Penix Jr.’s 0.22 expected points added per dropback (EPA/db) has made the grade so far.

Also in London last week, 50.0% of the Falcons’ end zone goals were achieved. I’ll add his touchdown assist if we could see him taking on one of the better workloads in the NFL with the rookie quarterback at the helm, and those odds don’t seem to think his role will change much at all .

Terry McLaurin over 65.5 receiving yards (-113)

Sunday’s game could be one for the wideouts.

The Falcons have been the most vulnerable at the position this season, allowing the ninth-most scores, ninth-most receiving yards, and the 11th-most yards per route run (YPRR) to wide receivers. Conversely, they rank 14th or worse in all of these categories for running backs and tight ends.

Like London, Terry McLaurin’s role as Washington’s WR1 is expanding. With Noah Brown (knee) out for the year, Scary Terry has seen a total of 16 targets in the last two weeks – representing a 23.8% improvement in Commanders’ appearance percentage.

Oddly enough, however, he is below average in the mileage department. He has averaged 14.1 yards per reception this season, but has only averaged 11.1 yards in that time. That could improve as the Falcons also deal with secondary injuries. Kevin King (concussion) and Antonio Hamilton (quad) will be absent from the Dirty Birds’ secondary.

Adopting McLaurin’s yardage prop requires the implication that this game script remains neutral and that points are plentiful. Luckily, my best bets for the Falcons-Commanders include Atlanta’s moneyline and the over, a scenario that lends itself well to DC’s best pass-catcher.
