The Arizona Cardinals come on offense and drop the New England Patriots

James Conner punished the New England Patriots with 16 carries for 110 yards and two touchdown runs, and the Arizona Cardinals did what good teams are supposed to do when playing weaker teams and defeated the New England Patriots on Sunday at State Farm Stadium with 30:17.

Kyler Murray played a flawless game, completing 23 of his 30 pass attempts for 224 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Murray’s rash throw, which was intercepted, was called back for a roughing penalty on the passer.

Trey McBride caught nine passes on 10 targets for 87 yards, while Conner had five catches for 28 yards.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was 19-23 for 202 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Cardinals are 7-7 this season, while the Patriots have fallen to 3-11.

Conner turns up the heat as Cards responds with overwhelming vigor

After Drake Maye hit Demario Douglas with a 3-yard TD pass, capping a six-play, 75-yard drive, Murray and Conner led a nine-play, 75-yard drive.

Murray hit McBride with passes of 9 yards and 26 yards, the latter keeping the drive alive.

On second-and-5, Conner’s furious 17-yard run opened the scoring and scored. Conner ended the game and perhaps secured the win with a 1-yard TD run.

Murray and James Conner help extend the lead to 23-3

Kyler Murray returned to the game at the end of the third quarter after an interception by Sean Murphy-Bunting and led a nine-play, 55-yard touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by James Conner.

The key play in the drive was a 29-yard pass to the New England 20-yard line from Murray to Trey McBride on a third-and-4.

Two runs from Conner and two passes from Murray to Conner set up a second-and-2 from the 1-yard line, but a shovel pass to McBride was unsuccessful, setting up Conner’s TD.

McBride still doesn’t have a touchdown reception.

Big stop from Kris Barnes ends the drive, Murray INT is cleared

Linebacker Kris Barnes filled a gap and stuffed Rhamondre Stevenson on fourth-and-1 at the Cardinals’ 4-yard line to end a New England drive with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter.

Arizona took the lead and caught a big break after Kyler Murray threw an interception. The Patriots were asked to roughly attack the passer, Murray left the play and the drive continued.

Clayton Tune entered the game at QB but couldn’t move the team, and the Patriots took over on their 33rd with 1:47 left in the third. It’s still 16-3.

Ryland’s third FG makes it 16:3

The Cardinals wanted a touchdown to open the second half. Instead, they settle for another field goal.

Chad Ryland’s third shot of the game, a 40-yarder, extended Arizona’s lead to 13 points, but this game is far from over.

A holding penalty on tight end Trey McBride negated a big run by James Conner that forced Arizona to a first-and-20.

The Cardinals lead 13-3 at halftime

The Cardinals had the ball with two minutes left in the first half and were hoping to score a touchdown before regaining possession early in the third quarter.

They were on their way to the end zone after a nifty 39-yard catch-and-run from receiver Greg Dortch, who had a great burst and juke for extra yards.

On the play just before, Trey McBride caught his second pass of the game, his 82nd reception of the season, which broke his franchise record for most catches in a single season by a tight end. McBride finished with 81 points a year ago, setting new standards.

On third-and-6 from the Patriots’ 17, Kyler Murray thought he had a touchdown on a fade pass to rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. It appeared Harrison had caught it, but cornerback Christian Gonzalez was able to fend it off and Arizona had to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Chad Ryland.

That gave the Cardinals a 13-3 lead at the start of the half.

Murray is 13 of 17 for 112 yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions and no sacks. New England’s Drake Maye is 10 of 10 for 71 yards with no TDs, no INTs and two sacks.

The Cardinals lead 204-89 total yards, including a 92-25 edge in rushing. James Conner leads the way with 71 yards on four carries, including his 53-yard gain early in the game.

The Patriots cut it to 10-3

The Patriots still haven’t reached the end zone, but they’ve gotten on the scoreboard.

Joey Slye’s 50-yard field goal capped a 12-play, 48-yard drive that took seven minutes, 30 seconds.

The Cards recover and fumble in the end zone for the TD

It’s not how they planned it, but the Cardinals went 80 yards in six plays and scored a touchdown when… Jonah Williams recovered a fumble in the end zone?

Yes.

Kyler Murray passed the ball to Greg Dortch, who darted around the left end and ran toward the goal line when Anfernee Jennings knocked the ball loose. He splashed into the end zone, but Williams, Arizona’s right tackle, was closest to him and pounced on the ball before it rolled out the back of the end zone.

Officers checked the play and the call stood.

Big plays during the drive began with a 53-yard run by James Conner down the left sideline, a direct snap on third-and-1 to DeeJay Dallas that went three yards, and a 7-yard run by Conner, also one direct snap.

The Cardinals lead 3-0 after a 49-yard FG

The Patriots won the first drive and appeared to be on track to score, but despite losing two players to injuries during the drive, the Cardinals kept New England out of the end zone and off the scoreboard.

A 53-yard field goal attempt by Joey Slye went wide left and missed.

However, Arizona lost inside linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. to a concussion and outside linebacker Jesse Luketa is questionable due to a hamstring injury.

The Cardinals responded with a 49-yard field goal from former Patriots kicker Chad Ryland to give Arizona an early 3-0 lead.

The big play during the short drive was a 23-yard pass from Kyler Murray to Marvin Harrison Jr.
