The attack on former Arizona Coyotes player Paul Bissonnette leads to charges

A Maricopa County grand jury has indicted a man who attacked former Arizona Coyotes hockey player Paul Bissonnette in November as he tried to break up a fight at a Scottsdale restaurant.

Sean Michael Daley was charged Dec. 3 with “violent and disruptive conduct and causing injury to Paul Bissonnette while impaired,” according to a statement from the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office released earlier this week.

Bissonnette was at Houston’s near McDonald Drive and Scottsdale Road on Nov. 24 when a fight broke out inside the restaurant between six men and restaurant management. He reportedly tried to help management calm the disruptive group and get them to leave.

The situation escalated and the men attacked Bissonnette both inside and outside the restaurant, Scottsdale police confirmed.

According to charging documents, a video showed three or four men attacking Bissonnette, who tried to run away before the suspect pinned him to the ground and appeared to kick him in the head and neck area. The suspect then tried to kick him again, but missed his target and fell backwards, allowing Bissonnette to flee to a nearby store, court documents show.

The grand jury indicted Daley on charges of aggravated assault, a class six felony, and disorderly conduct, a class one misdemeanor, prosecutors said.

Proceedings have also been initiated against three other people who are said to have been involved in the attack. These cases were initially presented with misdemeanor charges by the Scottsdale City Attorney’s Office. However, those cases were dismissed and instead referred to the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony consideration.

The three cases remain under review by the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office.
