The Best New Movies and TV Shows to Stream This Weekend on Netflix, Disney Plus, and More (December 27-29)

Out with the old and in with all the new movies and TV shows to watch this weekend. The last days of 2024 bring more new releases on Netflix, Disney Plus and other of the best streaming services.

At the top of my weekend watch list is Squid Game Season 2. The South Korean thriller is back with more deadly games for Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) to overcome as he tries to win the competition for good finish. On the movie side, “Gladiator II” is a premium video-on-demand offering, so you can be entertained from the comfort of your couch. Here’s our guide to what to watch this weekend.

The most-streamed Netflix series to date returns with new games, more treacherous thrills and even higher stakes. The last time we saw Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), aka Player 456, he had returned from boarding a plane to reconnect with his daughter and find a way to end the competition , which cost so many lives. Now, three years later and armed with more knowledge, he takes part in the games of life and death again, competing against new participants vying for the prize of 456 billion won. But his biggest enemy is the mysterious frontman (Lee Byung-hun), who keeps his true motives secret.

The wonders of streaming have made it much easier to take part in the beloved tradition of the Doctor Who Christmas special. Ncuti Gatwa returns as the Fifteenth Doctor, alongside Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan as a new character named Joy. When she checks into a London hotel in 2024, she opens a secret entrance to the Time Hotel – leading to danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor!

Comedian Nate Bargatze has been on the stand-up scene for years and is known for being a clean-cut comedian, but has become more of a crowd-pleaser with his guest appearance as host of “Saturday Night Live” last year (“Washington’s Dream” is an uprising). He returned as host again a few months ago, albeit with less impact (“Washington’s Dream 2” was still pretty funny). His third special is about pizza ordering strategies for men’s night, the desire for a second dog and dependence on his responsible wife.

More than two decades after “Gladiator” hit the box office and won the Oscars, Ridley Scott is presenting a direct sequel. Russell Crowe is not there because his character, Maximus Decimus Meridius, is long dead, although he is still there in spirit. Instead, the story focuses on prisoner of war Hanno (Paul Mescal), the long-lost son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). He returns to Rome as a gladiator, enslaved by Macrinus (Denzel Washington), an ambitious arms dealer who has his sights set on the throne. While Hanno uncovers the truth about his origins, he has to fight for survival in the Colosseum

Amy Adams returns to form in this dark, magical realism comedy about the life-changing (and body-altering) experience of motherhood. She plays an aspiring artist who takes a step back to raise her child. It falls mostly on her shoulders since her husband (Scoot McNairy) is away for work. Then something strange happens to her: she can turn into a dog at night. And it gives her wonderful relief from her daily parenting difficulties.
