Michigan State’s Aidan Chiles throws a pass before the game against Indiana on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

For about an hour or two Saturday, there was a slim chance of seeing Michigan State play another game this year. But that was wiped out thanks to Louisana Tech.

As we noted in a post yesterday, Marshall was forced out of the Independence Bowl due to the large number of players entering the transfer portal, opening the window for a 5-7 team to take its place. Therefore, there was a brief possibility that Michigan State would be asked to play in Marshall’s place. However, that is no longer in the game.

Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reported Saturday afternoon that Louisiana Tech would take Marshall’s spot in the Independence Bowl. The Bulldogs were also 5-7 and are located near Shreveport, Louisiana, where the bowl game is taking place.

There was never really much of a chance that Michigan State would end up in this bowl game, as there were a lot of logistical issues that would make that unlikely. But we now know for sure that it won’t happen. We have to wait until August 2025 for Michigan State football to be back on the field.
