The Detroit Lions signed former All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to the practice squad

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions are signing former All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to their practice squad. According to Schefter, it is expected that Adams will be added to the active roster at some point.

Adams is the latest in a series of defensive additions the Lions have made following multiple injuries. The following players were added in the last month:

  • EDGE Za’Darius Smith
  • DL Jonah Williams
  • DL Myles Adams
  • LB Ezekiel Turner
  • LB David Long
  • LB Kwon Alexander
  • S Kaevon Merriweather (training squad)

Adams, a first-round pick in 2017, has an illustrious history in the NFL. He is a three-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl safety, although he hasn’t received any of that recognition since 2020. After three years with the Jets, he struggled to stay healthy as a key member of the Seattle Seahawks from 2020 to 2023. He played in just 34 of 67 games during that four-season span.

Adams was cut from the Seahawks last offseason because he wanted to get younger and save space. After that, Adams waited a long time to sign with a new team, finally landing with the Tennessee Titans in July. But after playing just 20 snaps in four games, Adams requested his release, which the Titans ultimately granted.

The Lions don’t appear to be too short-handed at safety right now, as both starters Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph played 100 percent of the snaps on Thursday. However, the Lions’ reserves are a bit thin after Detroit placed Ifeatu Melifonwu on injured reserve (for the second time) a few weeks ago.

Adams could potentially add some versatility to the Lions’ secondary if they want to move Branch. Adams can also play a lot in the box – which could be helpful with Detroit’s undermanned linebackers. And at least Adams brings veteran experience. However, at 29 years old and with a long injury history, he has to show that he still has it and can stay healthy.
