The director of the New Karate Kid film says there were "really extensive discussions" with the Cobra Kai team to make sure they connected to the Netflix series

Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle said the Cobra Kai team was involved in “small steps” to connect the Netflix series to the new film.

The Karate Kid: Legends stars both Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, but with Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso causing a storm in the valley before the film’s events in Cobra Kai, Entwistle wanted everything to fit together seamlessly.

“I loved the idea that the films and the series could all be part of a family,” Entwistle told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve had some really in-depth conversations with the Cobra Kai team about cool things we can do in the film that can make the whole thing feel holistic.”

The director continued: “And obviously after all these years on Cobra Kai, Ralph is really, really close, and they’ve been involved in little steps along the way. Everything we talked about made it into the film in one way or another,” either through Ralph or through the conversations. We are very happy to have added another piece to the overall universe.

Since Cobra Kai ends in 2025, all we currently know is that The Karate Kid: Legends is set three years after the events of the Netflix series and sees Daniel teaming up with Mr. Han from 2010’s Jackie Chan’s The Karate Kid. Ben Wang plays the titular Karate Kid Li Fong.

“It wasn’t a quick decision because it was about protecting the Daniel LaRusso character and figuring out where he would be at that point and then protecting the entire legacy in the Miyagi-verse,” Macchio previously told Variety ” on the decision to repeat his role as the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai on the big screen alongside Jackie Chan: “When we managed to transfer the story of Cobra Kai into the new film – even if it was separate ones Ecosystems – it all made sense to me.” Then working with Jackie was just super exciting. How cool is it to bring it back to the big screen?”

The first two parts of the final season of Cobra Kai are streaming on Netflix, with the third and final part coming next year. Karate Kid: Legends hits theaters on May 30, 2025.
